Jesus Has Left The Building, October 18
Jesus Has Left the Building Outreach Event, Sunday, October 18
The JHLTB-2 Day of Service will be observed October 18. Everyone will meet together starting at 10 am in Memorial Hall for a preparatory worship. About 10:20 we will sing a Benediction hymn and then separate into our 3 projects. The Peace and Justice team hopes each of you can find an activity that meets your capabilities and interests.
Project 1. Work in a Community Garden: suitable for both adults and kids capable of some manual labor
This activity is provided through Seed St. Louis at MRH (Maplewood-Richmond Heights) Elementary School, with Almut Marino as our host. Meet together in Memorial Hall (Johari Hunt, convener) at the completion of Worship. Carpooling is encouraged. The official school address is 7314 Glades Ave, 63117. Persons participating in this activity will need to complete a waiver (available in the Narthex; and copies will be made available in Mem Hall on the day of service). Alternatively, the form can be found on the Seed St. Louis website (see link above). Gardening will require some standing, stooping, lifting, and most importantly, getting in the dirt.
Project 2. Walk the Labyrinth: suitable for both adults and kids with adequate mobility and does not require manual labor
A labyrinth is an aid to prayer, a walking meditation. It is not a maze. The entire path is in full view, which allows you to be quiet and focus internally. The private and inner journey can lead to spiritual healing, transformation, renewal, and peace. Use this link to see excellent guidelines for walking the labyrinth from Veriditas.
Logistics: After our worship, those who choose this activity will go to Mercy Conference and Retreat Center at 2039 N Geyer Rd, 63131, a 15-minute drive. Convene in Memorial Hall (Andrea Welnick, convener). This is an outdoor activity, so dress for the weather. Generally expect to spend 20-40 minutes in the labyrinth. As there will be several people participating, you give each other space as you walk. It is okay to pass others; if someone is coming up behind you, just step aside for a moment. You will receive a written introduction to walking a labyrinth at the Center, with some ideas about how to frame your experience, including: Preparation, Invocation, Entering, Reaching the Center, Walking Out, Thanksgiving, Reflection.
Project 3. Make Sandwiches for the St. Patrick’s Center: suitable for people either with limited mobility or who prefer a project limited to Memorial Hall
This group will create about 150 lunch bags in Memorial Hall for the St. Patrick’s Center. The bags will include a sandwich plus some extras as directed by the Center.
After worship, please assemble at the longitudinal tables close to the South wall of Memorial Hall. K Wentzien and Rosemary Hensley will organize how the bags are to be assembled. K will take the completed bags to St. Patrick’s Center shortly after the bag assembly has been completed.
If you have any questions, either now or later, you can ask Doug M for general questions, Johari about the community garden event, Andrea W about the labyrinth experience, or K about the lunch bag assembly activity.
